DAMS DESTROY VALUABLE NATURE AND HABITAT!

Do NOT let another Kárahnjúkar happen again! You can dare to care at:

[ SAVINGICELAND.ORG ]

I’m going to state very clearly upfront that I am NOT a stamp maker. But I have seen them, they seem to be popular, and if I had to do one, then perhaps it should be for a serious and worthy cause.

Before you stop and say, "Well this is there and it is none of my concern.” Then I beg you to listen. This is a direct statement make weeks ago by savingiceland.org and other members of it’s valuable habitat preservation to which I have been a member of for the last 2 years:

“With tears in my eyes I write these words I never believed I would. The flooding of Kárahnjúkar has now begun.

The Icelandic media has reported that within the first few hours of the closing of the dam doors on the morning of 28 September 2006, like a noose being tightened, the water level rose 15 meters. The entire 200m+ flooding depth will not be completed until next summer. Some people turned up to watch the valley be drowned, notably reporter Ómar Ragnarsson who will board a boat on the rising reservoir and film the death of the many waterfalls, valleys, cliffs, and so forth.

Despite two summers of an international protest camp in the Icelandic Highlands which was attended by hundreds of people from all over the world; despite a 15,000 people marching in Reykjavik the day before today, together with 200 from Akureyri, 50 in Ísafjörður, 100 in Egilsstaðir, a turnout which is over five times the size of the previous largest demonstration in the 300,000 person Iceland; despite a disastrous environmental assessment report; despite calls from scientists and nature lovers inside outside and out; despite all the consequences on Iceland’s economy; despite this area now to be known as the Halslon reservoir being of huge cultural significance to Iceland; despite it being the second largest wilderness in Europe: heavy industry has got its way and stolen this wilderness merely for the sake of the production of aluminium.”

You heard me right. This dam was built for nothing more than for a plant in which to produce tin foil .. well .. aluminium. And iwhat was the cost? It cost ALL of this here. Everything you will see in these photos below have now since been flooded, & entirely wiped out:

But if not there then where?

The direct motto for this stamp came about a result of an actual statement someone from Iceland made to me. They said, “I could care less..” and here weeks later, my thoughts have been haunted by that very statement. If not now, then when? When is the time to care? When is it time enough to start to care about the growing contamination of our wildlife and earth’s decreasing natural habitats and all it’s remaining wonders?

There is nothing that I say here that is not a fact. The number of endangered species is growing at a steady rate, our weather is changing, and global warming is a truth that can no longer be denied. It’s happening and it’s happening now. So tell me .. tell me when it is time that we should start to care?

Perhaps it is because I do not have the distinct pleasure of looking out my window and just seeing the valleys and fields go on and on until they disappear into the mist of some volcanic mountain range. When I look out my window I see streets, streets, and more streets and a network of concrete and construction. That just to have a front yard with grass is a valuable commodity for some people. Or to know that 5 times this passed summer our beaches were closed due to high bacteria content in the water.

So when? ... When IS it time to care?

Well, in a more civilized society more people would care now rather than later. Unfortunately, for a lot of people the business of day to day living is all consuming and sometimes it's just hard to take care of your own family much less worry about things going on in another part of the world.

Personally, I would love to get involved in the preservation of wild tigers, but I don't have the financial resources to do it right now.

I don't know what the answer is. Unfortunately, humans tend to be rather self centered and selfish most of the time.

No kidding. When I first heard about Kárahnjúkar it sounded more like something that might have happened 60 or 50 years ago --- now now when we are so very aware of what we are doing to our earth, or what has happened to other places as result.

By the way, caring does not need to mean 'financial'. A voice cost nothing.

Unfortunately the selfishness, carelessness, self centredness seem to be a part of being human which is really sad. Thanks to us the planet's stuffed up unless we learn how to conserve energy.

But a few people do care and it is them who will have the loudest voice. It's not all about money, it's about passion and caring.
:iconastakaren:
That's so cool of you!
You really care don't you?
I think this is really sad, and I regret that I never got a chance to see Kárahnjúka! I have never actually seen that place =/

does the world really NEED tin foil that bad? that just seems so ridiculously stupid to me. and it really bothers me because it makes me think that in future there will be no more beautiful places like iceland. everything will be like america... with a bunch of cities, and businesses, and crimes, and no hope. (well, it's true!) i don't understand why they would want to do that. i mean i know why... it's for profit. but i still don't understand. :(
:iconmaruki:
Yeah, I went through the websites that you've been putting in your journals and I sat down and looked at all the pictures of the area being flooded for this stupid aluminum factory. Just seeing those beautiful places makes my heart ache to go and see it all, but alas, I cannot. And since they've apparantly decided upon it, never will...

What's more worthwhile? Aluminum, or irreplaceable nature? *Darts off to learn how to use Stamps*

I just visited the savingiceland.org site today and saw a photo of a dead reindeer slumped by the bank of the flood waters — nice message and a terrible reality.

The fight for Kárahnjúkar itself might be lost, but it’s message and the truth of what it symbolizes certainly should not be — This is soooo much more than just Iceland. Everyday another acre of natural habitat is lost somewhere in the world. This isn’t just ‘their’ problem. It should be concern for all of us wherever we reside.

Still, there are other areas surrounding Kárahnjúkar that remain threatened as I speak and I feel that we should take measures to ensure that something like this is not allowed to happened again.

On a side note, because I want to make this absolutely clear, this is in NO way, shape, or form related to, or about LazyTown. This is about an absolutely glorious and unspoiled country that I have seen. I live in New York and while it’s true that we do have beautiful places to go to, these areas are all to often dealt with like they were reservations. They’re fenced in and are — as they say it, ‘controlled’. They are no longer just allowed to be naturally wild. If we do not take the steps to conserve, more, more, and more places in the world will no doubt fall into this same exact definition. Like buying a ticket just to see a tree!

Yes. Yes I do. I actually care a lot more than you can realize.

I’ll say it again, “I’m jealous’ .. I’m jealous and envious of the wild natural array of beauty I have found in Iceland. When I first saw photos of it 7 years ago, I was absolutely dumbfounded and amazed at how very open and unplundered this country was and wished that I could have something just like this at home. Even in the capital, Reykjavik itself I can look out and watch the country side just flow until it disappear into the mist — There is no capital I’m aware of anywhere around me where that can be done!

I don’t want to see your country to turned into another NYC or some other congested metropolis thick with pollution, smog, and waters thick brown with sewage.

Same here! I would never forgive the Althing for that.

Aside from that, but isn't that seriously bad karma in Iceland? Destorying such places, I mean? I've always heard that Icelanders are very particular about not harming certain rocks and such areas because of the hidden ones.
