ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL
O’ Heavenly Prince Michael. Be our defense in battle we pray
One of a series of commissions I would eventually do originally from 1995-1996 for the Holy Angels Parish and Father Hebert. I took steps to update and restore this work several years ago, but as my experience grew and new tools and better techniques became available, I’ve longed to visit it again with a whole new approach.
When I originally did this illustration for Holy Angels Parish, my inspiration was Byzantine icons and that of lanterns and the glow of candles. Angels are the morning stars of heaven, they are the shining ones. In Exodus 34:35, Moses was said to have a face that was so profoundly radiant from his communication with God that he needed to wear a veil before the people. Could you imagine then what a angel would truly look like if you saw one? To be bathed perpetually in God’s holy light, I could only visualize beings carved of light and skin like gold. Lanterns of the Lord!
Updating Michael took 3 textures (water paper, a piece of old wood that I actually scanned for that old icon look, and a sheet of scratched metal) new wings, and a redo of his cloak and armor in 9 layers —All of this without overwhelming or compromising the original work. I also wanted to use this update to restore details that had faded. Many never noticed before that Michael was wearing a silver crown.
